Bulk Gravel and Aggregate Delivery Across Illinois
What holds up under an Illinois driveway? CA-6, the dense graded crushed limestone that yards here call road base.
Illinois Rock Supply brings bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across Illinois, ordered online and tipped on site.
Most of the state sits on deep, dark prairie silt loam over glacial till. That ground is heavy, it holds water, and a thin base over it will not survive a wet spring.
Materials Delivered Across Illinois
Start with the job, then pick the material. A driveway, a drain and a patio each want something different.
CA-6 is dense graded crushed limestone with the fines left in. It is the Illinois base material for driveways, parking pads, shed and garage bases and trench backfill.
Article 1004.01 sets the coarse aggregate gradations CA 1 through CA 20, so dense graded base is CA-6.
For clean stone, Illinois yards work by number. CA-7 is washed 1 inch stone with no fines, for bedding under pipe and drainage trenches.
CA-11 is the 3/4 inch clean washed stone sold alongside it for bedding and concrete work.
CA-16 Chips are 3/8 inch chips for permeable paver bedding and drainage around tanks. Lime Screenings are the crushed limestone fines used to bed pavers and flagstone.
In sand, Washed Sand is the coarse washed sand Illinois yards call torpedo sand, for concrete, leveling and bedding. Mason Sand is finer, for brick and block mortar and paver joints.
For soil and cover, Top Soil is screened prairie topsoil for lawns, grading and bed prep. Garden Soil fills raised beds and vegetable plots, and Shredded Mulch holds moisture through an Illinois summer.
RipRap is heavy broken stone for bank protection, culvert outlets and slope armoring. Article 1005.01 sets those as gradations RR 3 through RR 7.
For decorative work, River Gravel is rounded stone for beds and borders, and 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel suits walkways and play areas.
Ground and Climate Across Illinois
Illinois ground changes a lot from north to south, and the base under your project has to answer for it.
Along the Chicago lake plain and the northeastern moraines, heavy silt and clay sit close to Lake Michigan. Clay-rich till runs inland through the moraines, with dolomite shallow in places along the Des Plaines and Kankakee.
Northern Illinois till plains and Rock River country are loamy prairie soils over dolomite, broken by sand and gravel in the Green River Lowland. The Driftless northwest is the one corner the ice never covered: deep loess over limestone, thin soil on the ridges, rock close to the surface.
Central and eastern Illinois is the Grand Prairie till plain, flat to gently rolling under deep prairie silt loams. The Illinois River valley and its sand areas are droughty sandy terraces over silt and clay bottoms.
Western Illinois loess uplands run to the Mississippi border, with dissected bluffs and limestone sinkhole karst in the Monroe and Randolph sinkhole plain. Southern Illinois is loess over old Illinoian drift, with tight claypan subsoil that makes for hard, slow ground.
Flat prairie ground with dense clay subsoil and almost no natural fall is the statewide drainage driver. Claypan sits close to the surface in the south, and heavy spring and summer thunderstorms load every slope.
That is why so much Illinois farmland is tile drained.
Erosion follows the same pattern: sheet and gully erosion on loess slopes and bluffs, stream bank scour after heavy rain, and flooding on the Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio and Wabash bottomlands. Lake Michigan bluff and shore erosion drives work in the northeast.
Frost depth is set by the local building department under the statewide code. Published figures run from about 42 inches in the northern counties through about 36 inches in central Illinois to about 30 inches in the far south.
Base, driveway and paver work runs from the spring thaw into late fall, with a longer window in the south. Frozen ground stops compaction in winter, and a wet spring holds crews off soft clay.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Illinois
Which stone is best for drainage in Illinois?
Use clean washed stone with no fines. CA-7 and CA-11 are the 3/4 inch to 1 inch sizes Illinois yards sell for French drains, drywells, foundation drains and downspout runs. CA-16 Chips work for tighter drainage around tanks and under permeable pavers. Fines-bearing material like CA-6 does not drain, so keep it out of a drainage trench.
What do I need to have ready for a bulk delivery?
A clear spot where the truck can reach and tip the load in one pile. The driver does not place or spread material. Have your quantity decided before checkout, and pick your delivery date there. If the ground is soft from a wet spring, a firm approach helps the truck get in and out.
What is the best base material for a patio in Illinois?
CA-6, the dense graded crushed limestone with the fines left in. It compacts into a stable base for patios, walkways and pads. Bed pavers and flagstone over lime screenings, which is the standard bedding layer here.
