CA-6, Sand and Gravel Delivery in Rock Island County, IL
Planning a driveway, a patio base or a drainage run in Rock Island County? Illinois Rock Supply delivers gravel, stone and aggregate across the county, and most of it starts with CA-6.
That is the Illinois base material: dense graded crushed limestone with the fines left in, also called road base.
It goes under drives, parking pads, shed and garage bases and trench backfill. If your site sits on the deep loess that covers this part of the state, the base you build matters more than the surface you see.
Materials Delivered in Rock Island County
CA-6 is the base course for almost any compacted surface, from a driveway to a garage pad to a utility trench.
Ordering by that number, rather than by a generic description, is how material gets specified and ordered in this state.
Washed clean stone comes next. CA-7 is 1 inch clean stone with no fines, for bedding under pipe, drainage trenches and French drains.
CA-11 is the 3/4 inch clean washed stone yards sell alongside it for bedding, drainage and concrete flatwork.
CA-16 chips are the small 3/8 inch stone used for permeable paver bedding and drainage around tanks. For the largest clean size.
Sand and soil round out a load. Torpedo sand is the coarse washed sand for concrete and leveling, and lime screenings are the crushed limestone fines that bed pavers and flagstone.
Mason sand is the finer clean sand for mortar, paver joints and sandboxes.
Screened topsoil handles lawns and bed prep, garden soil fills raised beds and vegetable plots, and fill dirt raises grade before a CA-6 base course goes down. On the decorative side, Natural Pea Gravel, river gravel and large river rock cover walkways, beds, borders and downspout splash areas.
Choosing the Right Material
The ground under the Quad Cities Area does not change much from one side of the river to the other. Mercer County shares Rock Island County's ground region, so the same base and drainage choices apply there.
Henry County is the one that differs. Its ground is Northern Illinois till plains and Rock River country: Wisconsin Episode till and loamy prairie soils over dolomite, broken by sand and gravel in the Green River Lowland and by rocky hill country along the Rock River.
That till is denser and less silty than the loess uplands here. Where a Henry County site holds a firm, well graded subgrade, the same CA-6 base behaves differently than it does on deep loess.
Loess sheds water fast on slopes and holds it in the flats, so drainage under and around a base matters. On a Henry County till plain, water tends to move across the surface rather than soak in.
Match the material to the job. CA-6 for a compacted base, CA-7 or CA-11 where water has to pass through, CA-16 chips and lime screenings where the layer has to be fine and even.
Riprap goes where a bank or outlet needs armoring.
Ground Conditions Across Rock Island County
Across the Western Illinois loess uplands and the Mississippi border, the ground is deep loess over older Illinoian drift on rolling uplands, with dissected bluffs and steep ravines. That soil sheds water fast on slopes and holds it in the flats.
A thin base on ground like that shows its weakness quickly. Water sits, the surface rutting starts, and the fix is a proper base course and a way for water to leave.
CA-6 gives you the compacted base; CA-7 or CA-11 gives water a path out.
Erosion is the other local driver. Gully and rill erosion in loess on steep bluffs and ravines, plus slumping on cut slopes, means bare ground on a grade does not stay put.
Riprap armors banks, culvert outlets and pond edges where runoff concentrates.
Work here runs from the spring thaw into late fall, a little longer than upstate. Cold winters bring freeze and thaw, and frost still lifts drives and walks each spring.
Frost depth is set by the local building department, so check with them for your project.
