Gravel, Stone and Soil for Marshall County, IL

Gravel, Stone and Soil for Marshall County, IL

For gravel, stone and aggregate delivery in Marshall County, IL, the ground under the job decides what you put on top of it. Illinois Rock Supply sells bulk material by the ton and the yard, delivered by dump truck.

Most drives, pads and trench work here start with CA-6.

Marshall County spans two very different kinds of ground, and each one asks something different of a base.

Ground Conditions Across Marshall County

The county sits on two ground regions. Around Toluca, Wenona, Varna and Sparland the land is flat to gently rolling till under deep, dark prairie silt loams.

Around Henry and Lacon it is the Illinois River valley and its sand areas, with wind-blown sand on the terraces and silt and clay on the low bottoms.

On the till plain side, the ground is some of the flattest in the country with dense clay subsoil beneath it and almost no natural fall. Water stands rather than runs after heavy rain, which is why so much farmland there is tile drained.

A base that holds water softens and ruts.

On the river valley side, sand takes water quickly and holds almost none. The trouble is a base that washes and settles rather than one that stays wet.

Low bottoms along the Illinois flood when the river comes up.

Erosion follows the same split. On the uplands, sheet erosion moves bare silt loam and runoff gullies where it concentrates.

On the sand, wind moves bare ground and water ruts loose sandy drives.

Cold winters bring repeated freeze and thaw, and frost heave shows up in gravel drives, walks and shallow slabs each spring. Frost depth runs about 36 inches through most of central and eastern Illinois, rising to 40 or 42 inches toward the northern edge, and the local building department sets it.

Timing splits too. On the uplands, base, driveway and paver work runs from the spring thaw into late fall, and the ground is slow to dry in a wet spring.

On the sandy ground, work starts earlier, but river bottoms stay off limits during high water.

Materials Delivered in Marshall County

Order by the job you are building. A driveway, a patio and a drain each want a different stone, and the local name is how you order it.

CA-6 carries the most weight in local work. It is dense graded crushed limestone with the fines left in.

Article 1004.01 sets the coarse aggregate gradations CA 1 through CA 20, so CA-6 is the number a contractor writes on an order for base.

Clean stone is specified the same way. CA-7 and CA-11 cover the 1 inch and 3/4 inch washed sizes, CA-16 is the 3/8 inch chip, and Article 1005.01 sets the riprap gradations RR 3 through RR 7.

Choosing the Right Material

LaSalle County and Putnam County share Marshall County's ground regions, both the northern Illinois till plains and the Illinois River valley and sand areas. The ground is the same, so the same base and drainage choices carry across.

Bureau County differs. Its ground runs to Wisconsin Episode till and loamy prairie soils over dolomite, broken by the sand and gravel of the Green River Lowland and by rocky Rock River hill country.

That is a different set of conditions from Marshall County's silt loam uplands and river sand.

Where the ground is sandy and free draining, a clean washed stone such as CA-7 or CA-11 suits bedding and drainage, because water passes through instead of sitting. Where the ground is silt loam over dense clay, a fines-bearing base such as CA-6 gives you a surface that knits together under a compacted load.

For a driveway, start with CA-6 as the base course, then top it with Driveway Gravel if you want a finer running surface. For a patio or walk, Walkway Gravel gives a walkable finish over a compacted base.

For drainage, use clean stone. Drain Rock, CA-7 or CA-11 all pass water, and Crusher Run is the secondary name for a fines-bearing base like CA-6.

Beds and tree rings take Shredded Mulch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Marshall County

When is the best time of year to order base material in Marshall County?

On the uplands, base, driveway and paver work runs from the spring thaw into late fall. The ground is slow to dry in a wet spring and frozen solid through the winter. On the sandy river valley ground, the soil dries and works earlier in spring, but low bottoms stay off limits during high water. Work there runs into late fall as well.

What is the difference between topsoil and fill dirt?

Topsoil is the dark, silty prairie surface layer, sold screened for lawns, grading and bed prep. Fill Dirt is bulk material for raising grade before a base course goes down. Use fill to build up a low spot, then topsoil where you want something to grow. They are not interchangeable.

What is CA-6 and what is it used for in Marshall County?

CA-6 is dense graded crushed limestone with the fines left in, the Illinois base material. It goes under driveways, parking pads, shed and garage bases and trench backfill. It is also called CA6, road base or 3/4 dense grade.
