Start with CA-6. It is the base material for driveways, parking pads, shed and garage bases and trench backfill around here.
Materials Delivered in LaSalle County
CA-6 is the Illinois base material. It is dense graded crushed limestone with the fines left in, and Article 1004.01 of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction lists it as CA 6.
In the northeast, some Chicago area yards call the same material grade 8, grade 9 or road mix; downstate yards say CA-6. Order it for road base under drives, pads, shed floors and trench backfill.
Crusher Run is the secondary name for the same fines-in stone, and Fill Dirt raises grade before a CA-6 course goes down.
CA-7 and CA-11 are the 3/4 inch to 1 inch sizes for bedding under pipe, drainage trenches, French drains and concrete flatwork.
CA-16 chips are the 3/8 inch size for permeable paver bedding and drainage around tanks. Riprap covers the heavy broken stone for bank protection, culvert outlets, pond edges and slope armoring, and Article 1005.01 sets those as gradations RR 3 through RR 7.
For decorative work, 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel is rounded washed gravel for walkways, play areas and fence post mix. River Gravel and Large River Rock cover beds, borders and dry creek beds.
Top Soil and Shredded Mulch finish lawns and beds.
Ground Conditions Across LaSalle County
LaSalle County spans two ground regions. In the northern Illinois till plains and Rock River country around Streator, LaSalle, Mendota and Oglesby, the working season runs from the spring thaw into late fall and is a little shorter than downstate.
Frozen ground stops compaction in the winter, so timing a delivery matters.
In the Illinois River valley and the sand areas around Ottawa, Peru and Marseilles, sandy ground dries and works early in the spring, but river bottoms stay off limits during high water. Work there runs into late fall.
The two zones behave differently under a base. Till ground holds a high water table on flat land, while sand plains drain almost too fast and the base washes and settles instead of staying wet.
A base on tight till ground needs drainage planned in; sand ground loses fines from underneath.
Erosion follows the same split. In the till plains, gully and sheet erosion cuts steeper slopes and wind moves bare sand.
In the river valley, wind moves bare sand, water ruts loose sandy drives, and the river scours banks and floods low bottoms. Riprap and clean stone are the armoring choices on bank and slope work.
Frost action is heavy here. The county frost depth is about 42 inches, and the local building department sets footing depth.
That figure is for footings, not for gravel base construction.

Choosing the Right Material
Kendall County sits on heavy silt and clay of the old Lake Chicago lake plain, with clay-rich till in the moraines and shallow dolomite in places. That is finer ground than LaSalle County's sand areas, so drainage moves slower and a base there holds water differently than sandy LaSalle ground.
Grundy County spans both the Chicago lake plain and the Illinois River valley and sand areas, so part of it shares LaSalle County's ground and behaves the same way.
Livingston County is a flat to gently rolling till plain under deep, dark prairie silt loams. That is tighter ground than the sand terraces along the Illinois valley, so water sits longer and drainage stone matters more there.
